The
Hilltoppers Wrestling Club thrives because of many individuals hard work
and dedication. However this club would not exist except for the strong
wrestling foundation that has been established at E.C. Glass by very
special individuals over the last 40 years. Although we can not do
enough to thank these individuals for furthering our sport we hope that
recognizing them for their accomplishments is a step in the right
direction.
On
February 5, 2008 the Hilltoppers wrestling club held it's annual Award
Banquet at E. C. Glass High School. Prior to the Awards Banquet the
Board of directors unanimously approved three individuals for induction
into the hall of fame. All three inductees we present at the
awards ceremony and over 150 people were in attendance. The three
inductees were:

Attended Blacksburg Elementary School, Blacksburg High School(9th
grade), Fork Union Military Academy(10th – Post Graduate),
graduated from Virginia Tech 1966 with BS in Industrial Arts Education.
Wrestling
Career:
Began wrestling at Blacksburg High School in 9th grade. Fork
Union did not have a wrestling program, but I played football and track.
Started wrestling at Tech my sophomore year thru junior year --
placed 4th at Southern Conference Tournament. Senior year
injured knee and was unable to wrestle, but stayed with the team as
student/coach.
Coaching
Career:
Started wrestling program as head coach in fall of 1969 at Glass.
Became assistant coach to Ivan Winston for 2 years.
Was appointed head
coach 1972 to 1976. Became
assistant coach to Bill Hill in 1977.
Officiating
Career:
Started officiating wrestling in 1971 as a member of the Roanoke
Wrestling Officials Association. In
1973 started the first wrestling officials association in the Lynchburg
area. Two years later, the
group became part of the Lynchburg Area Officials Association
(now COA) which I was commissioner (on and off) until I retired from
teaching after 32 years. I
have continued to officiate matches, and hope to continue to do so (for
as long as my body will allow).
My officiating experiences include working many district, regional, and
state tournaments in both public and private school venues.
Last year at the Virginia State Tournament in Salem, VA, I was
given a plaque from the Virginia High School League for 35 years of
dedicated service as a wrestling official by Mr. Tom Dolan, head of
officials for the VHSL.

Additional
information:
Currently work part-time at London Downs Golf Club and drive activity
bus for Heritage when needed. My
wife, Mary and I, organized in 1995, and continue to help run The
Heritage Invitational Golf Tournament for Heritage held at London Downs
each year. The tournament
is one of the largest in the state of Virginia hosting 24 teams with 120
participants. Other
interests I have (other than officiating wrestling) are playing golf
with my friends, and also with my wife Mary; working in my basement in
the woodworking shop; keeping the yard is decent shape; and having the
pleasure of seeing my daughter Sara, grandson Calvin, and son-in-law
Scott who live in Roanoke. I
also enjoy beating my step-son Brian at golf whenever.

Athletic Corridor trying to decide whether I should go indoor track
practice, tryouts for 9th grade basketball or try
wrestling…She said, “Why don’t you try wrestling, not many African
Americans wrestle”….it was the challenge that I needed.

Mrs. Scott my science teacher who was one of my biggest fans and
was like my wrestling mom at school.
