The Hilltoppers Wrestling Club thrives because of many individuals hard work and dedication. However this club would not exist except for the strong wrestling foundation that has been established at E.C. Glass by very special individuals over the last 40 years. Although we can not do enough to thank these individuals for furthering our sport we hope that recognizing them for their accomplishments is a step in the right direction.

On February 5, 2008 the Hilltoppers wrestling club held it's annual Award Banquet at E. C. Glass High School. Prior to the Awards Banquet the Board of directors unanimously approved three individuals for induction into the hall of fame.  All three inductees we present at the awards ceremony and over 150 people were in attendance. The three inductees were:

John T. Scott

Former Hilltoppers Varsity Wrestling Head Coach

Date of Birth:   May 30, 1943

Current place of Residence: Lynchburg, VA

Academic Career:

Attended Blacksburg Elementary School, Blacksburg High School(9th grade), Fork Union Military Academy(10th – Post Graduate), graduated from Virginia Tech 1966 with BS in Industrial Arts Education.

 Wrestling Career:

Began wrestling at Blacksburg High School in 9th grade. Fork Union did not have a wrestling program, but I played football and track.  Started wrestling at Tech my sophomore year thru junior year -- placed 4th at Southern Conference Tournament. Senior year injured knee and was unable to wrestle, but stayed with the team as student/coach.

Coaching Career:

Started wrestling program as head coach in fall of 1969 at Glass.  Became assistant coach to Ivan Winston for 2 years.  Was appointed  head coach 1972 to 1976.  Became assistant coach to Bill Hill in 1977.

Officiating Career:

Started officiating wrestling in 1971 as a member of the Roanoke Wrestling Officials Association.  In 1973 started the first wrestling officials association in the Lynchburg area.  Two years later, the group became part of the Lynchburg Area Officials Association (now COA) which I was commissioner (on and off) until I retired from teaching after 32 years.  I have continued to officiate matches, and hope to continue to do so (for as long as my body will allow).

My officiating experiences include working many district, regional, and state tournaments in both public and private school venues.  Last year at the Virginia State Tournament in Salem, VA, I was given a plaque from the Virginia High School League for 35 years of dedicated service as a wrestling official by Mr. Tom Dolan, head of officials for the VHSL.

Additional information:

Currently work part-time at London Downs Golf Club and drive activity bus for Heritage when needed.  My wife, Mary and I, organized in 1995, and continue to help run The Heritage Invitational Golf Tournament for Heritage held at London Downs each year.  The tournament is one of the largest in the state of Virginia hosting 24 teams with 120 participants.  Other interests I have (other than officiating wrestling) are playing golf with my friends, and also with my wife Mary; working in my basement in the woodworking shop; keeping the yard is decent shape; and having the pleasure of seeing my daughter Sara, grandson Calvin, and son-in-law Scott who live in Roanoke.  I also enjoy beating my step-son Brian at golf whenever.
